HPV Vaccine – Gardasil

The vaccine, Gardasil, protects against sub-types of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) which can cause cancer of the cervix and genital warts. The vaccine is highly effective and immunity lasts for many years and possibly life. It is not yet known if booster injections are necessary. Vaccinations consists of 3 injections at 0, 2 and 6 month intervals.

We recommend vaccination of girls at the ages of 13 and 14 years but it is licensed for women and girls from 9 – 26. Vaccination beyond 26 is at the discretion of your doctor. After vaccination, it is still essential to have regular smear tests from the age of 20 years, or 2 years after the first sexual contact.

The government have chosen a similar vaccine for the UK immunisation schedule. It is called Cervarix and it also protects against the types of HPV that causes cervical cancer. However, it does not protect against the types of HPV that cause genital warts. Genital warts are a significant problem in the UK and transmission of the HPV types that causes them is only partly reduced by the use of condoms. As a result, many doctors consider Gardasil to be superior to Cervarix.
